Google is continuously making improvements to its algorithm and how websites are ranked on its organic search results page. This means companies have to keep up with these changes to increase their ranking or continue to rank highly. The latest Google algorithm update for 2021 has just been announced, so this is what it means for you and your company.

Google Algorithm Update for 2021 Overview

SEO includes several variables, and you can see improvements in the search engine rankings based on any of them. This involves simple strategies like using keywords, ensuring the content is appropriate to the page’s keywords and titles. This will help in providing a quick load time. These all play a part in ensuring that the person who uses Google finds relevant information. This information is for that specific search and enters it in a search term. This could be for local services, some topic information, or even for shopping purposes.

The emphasis on those parameters often shifts as the algorithm changes. Google launched ‘Panda’ in 2016, for example, an update to the algorithm that prioritized websites with content of high quality. The days of keyword stuffing, redundant content, or very little content to place highly on the search results are gone.

Page Experience Update

The new Google algorithm update for 2021 shifts the focus on the web visitor’s page experience. That means your rating now depends heavily on how well users can access and connect with your website. With a few recent features, the focus on user experience builds on those pre-existing requirements. Criteria for updating this algorithm include:

  • Loading
  • Interactivity
  • Visual stability
  • Mobile-friendliness
  • Safe browsing
  • Https
  • Intrusive interstitial guidelines

Google algorithm update for 2021 is called Page Experience Update.

Why is Google starting this new algorithm?

Both internal studies and broader industry research show that users prefer sites that provide user-friendly experiences. In recent years, Google has added several ranking results factors that determine the user experience. It includes as to how fast the page loads the content (page speed) and mobile-friendliness.

Earlier in May 2020, the Chrome team revealed Core Web Vitals better to quantify the web user experience of site owners. It is a collection of metrics related to speed, responsiveness, and visual stability. Core Web Vitals are a series of real-world, user-centered metrics and measure critical aspects of user experience. They calculate web usability dimensions such as loading time, interactivity, and the quality of content as it loads. The Google algorithm update for 2021 aims to provide a holistic image of the user experience. This means that the better it is for your rankings, the more you follow all of the criteria. It will provide a better experience for your website visitors.

If your overall website experience is positive, Google will drive you higher-a few bad pages among several good sites. It will not see your ranking fall. Keeping an eye on user experience will be crucial to pushing the ranks up, though. Some things to look at while making these changes are the popups on your website. Also, consider whether a mobile device uses some features on your website. Because mobile traffic now accounts for more than half of all web traffic.

Why is user experience necessary?

User experience is indeed a significant part of SEO. This is because good experience with the user allows the web visitor to stay longer on the website and eventually click around more than if they were bad. This then indicates to Google that the search query was good at showing you on the results page. A user who sticks around on page tells Google that your website is a significant outcome and a match for him. Thus, your website may be the best place for other people looking for that specific word or similar searches.

The promotion on their website of businesses with good user experience pushes more websites to be enhanced. This also increases the probability that site users will turn to pay customers (or some other conversion). And this will lead to improved business success afterward.

So not only optimizing your site for user experience would improve conversion rate, but it will also raise Google rankings!

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Grammy-winning Colombian singer, songwriter and producer Andrés Cepeda will partner to collaboratively compose the artist’s next single, a pioneering initiative in the region, marking the convergence of artistic talent and artificial intelligence technology.

To that end, Andrés Cepeda will make available to IBM part of his music history for IBM Watson –through technologies such as Watson Beat and Watson Tone Analyzer- to indicate the emotional tone, language and music structure that match the sentiment of his fans. The technology will help him compose a full song (music and lyrics) whose final arrangement and performance will be the responsibility of the artist.

IBM’s cognitive computing system, Watson, is a cloud-based platform that learns similarly to humans via senses, learning, and experience. It can analyze large volumes of unstructured and structured data, understand natural language, and glean insights to improve the decision-making of professionals in a wide range of fields. As Watson learns information from additional data, its machine learning capabilities makes it more intelligent over time to solve challenges and expand human expertise.

Through this partnership, IBM Watson Beat will study big volumes of data including the lyrics and melodies of the artist’s full musical pieces, and IBM Watson Tone Analyzer will study conversations on social networks and social trends, among other sources, taking Andres Cepeda’s creativity and potential to a whole new level and integrating the highest human sensitivity with leading-edge technology to create a totally new collaboration in music.

The resulting collaboration with Andrés Cepeda will be released in September, with the introduction of a new single to drop by the end of the year.

“As artists, we want to create deep connections with our audience and find inspiration in places we never imagined. For that reason, IBM Watson is a great assistant to accomplish this goal,” said Andrés Cepeda.

“This partnership with Grammy-winner Andrés Cepeda is a sign of how augmented intelligence can help artists and other professionals spark new innovations and discoveries in music and other industries including healthcare, finance, and architecture,” said Federico Martínez, General Manager IBM Colombia. “Andrés is a forward thinking artist who will revolutionize the Latin America music industry through cognitive computing that understands human emotions, social trends, language styles, and the most successful rhythms or hits, to help musicians continue creating in really innovative ways.”

This project uses Watson Beat, which interprets musical theory, structure and emotional intent from a few notes and can expand upon it to create entire songs; and Watson Tone Analyzer, which detects tone and style in a piece of text in conversation or communications. Tone Analyzer uses linguistic analysis to detect three types of tones in written text: emotions, social tendencies, and writing style.

Data is a beautiful thing — and a powerful business tool. But it doesn’t manage itself. Today’s information- and application-intensive business environments demand systems that can accommodate enormous transaction processing workloads with a proven infrastructure, while keeping the focus on reliability, security, and availability.

They also need to work at breakneck speed and combine endurance with vast storage capability and serviceability. Such is the case with the latest server from IBM — the Power System S812.

With the proven Power8 processor at its core, the Power System S812 is the entry point into the Power8 server family and brings a range of advantages, not the least of which is the double-speed to which it moves data to the point of impact. The S812 is a smart option for small businesses and scale out deployments that require powerful processing in a small footprint. While the Power System S812 supports a maximum of 64 GB DDR4 memory for IBM i workloads as well as a maximum of 128 GB DDR4 memory for AIX tasks, it’s extremely energy efficient, and easy to manage.

The S812 brings the power of data systems technology to a whole new level. The thrust of the innovative Power System S812 combines enhanced speed with greater efficiencies to move the physical and virtual boundaries of data center technology to drive faster data-centric applications that businesses rely on for increased productivity. Data-intensive businesses will appreciate the faster insights provided by the S812’s POWER8 processor, as well as the smart acceleration enabled by CAPI technologies such as accelerators for key workloads.

Additionally, the S812 allows businesses to achieve lower latency and a smaller footprint with CAPI Flash. IT professionals can also move data in and out of systems with greater speed and efficiency, thanks to double the memory and I/O expansion. The Power System S812 also provides enhanced speed and efficiency for database, transactional and other highly multi-threaded applications, thanks to transactional memory that is supported by 50 percent more cores — and twice the number of simultaneous threads per core.

The Power System S812 server solutions and services have been designed for small- to medium-sized businesses requiring optimal performance while keeping their infrastructure state of the art. Building on the success of IBM’s groundbreaking Power Systems line, the S812 is an invaluable tool to help organizations to take advantage of new business opportunities and manage risk, while providing an incomparable level of service, all designed to fit neatly into tight budgets.

At the Coachella Music and Art Festival this week, HP can add immersive art installations to the long list of Workstation-powered creativity.

HP partnered with visual artists Android Jones and Eric Paré at Coachella, where they’ve installed mind-blowing, immersive installations for festival-goers to experience at the HP Antarctic dome and the HP Lounge.

At the heart of both of the art experiences are HP Workstations, which brought powerful technology to the artists’ fingertips.

Painting with light

Photographer Eric Paré tapped HP Workstations to create an interactive “light painting” installation called “Kinetic Art.”

His technique involves using dozens of high-speed cameras to capture moving light trails against a dark background. The composite images, taken in 120 degrees around his subject, creates dynamic shapes in an explosion of color for a one-of-a-kind photo.

His technique involves using dozens of high-speed cameras to capture moving light trails against a dark background. The composite images, taken in 120 degrees around his subject, creates dynamic shapes in an explosion of color for a one-of-a-kind photo.

Capturing each image required a custom rig made up of some 28 cameras and two HP Workstations, which Paré said “made the whole experience super-smooth.”

“No matter how optimized is our software, there’s a lot of processing going on here,” he said. “HP gave us the best performance we’ve ever had so far.”

Enter the Antarctic

The centerpiece of HP’s Coachella experience is housed inside 60-foot tall geodesic dome, dubbed the “Antarctic,” that brings digital artist Android Jones vision to life.

Festival-goers can lounge on bean bag chairs inside the dome and watch an 8-minute show that combines animated digital art and music in a sequence that’s right out of Jones’ imagination.

He describes it as a journey of colorful, shifting, organic shapes that starts with molecular imagery that slowly builds on itself to form more complex objects, including a massive eyeball. The second half of the piece is a visual trip where the viewer is “flying through this interdimensional kaleidoscope and merry-go-rounds of archetypes, shapes and faces,” according to Jones, who describes himself as an “electro-mineralist.”

Creating this 360-degree experience inside the dome—the largest installation of this type for Jones—took a massive amount of computing power to render the images projected onto the dome, which covered some 11,000 square feet.

Jones estimates each image had to be about 8,000 by 15,000 pixels in size in order to project them on the interior of the dome at 60 frames per second, a feat he described as the “highest output we have worked with.”

“We had to create huge map images to render out the frames and create the full-dome, immersive experience,” Jones said. “We needed to be working at the highest level of computation and we needed some really powerful workstations to render it within the timeline. That was made possible by the HP machines.”

In a separate installation inside the HP Lounge, Jones tapped HP’s OMEN gaming computers to create a more intimate experience with his art. In this installation, festival-goers could don VR headsets to manipulate and interact with a shorter version of what was playing on a loop in the Antarctic dome.

Jones and his tech team rendered art using the latest NVDIA graphics processors cranking at astonishing speeds—some 11 teraflops, or about 11 trillion calculations per second—to generate a VR experience that can trick the human brain into thinking computer-generated imagery is real.

Jones, who’s toured with music festivals for more than a decade, said that if his audience has one thing in common, it’s that “people want to get their minds blown and they want to see something they’ve never seen before,” he said. “These tools enable a whole new level and dimension of creative possibilities.”

Weekend two of Coachella continues through April 23. For exclusive content, follow along on Twitter with the hashtag HPCoachella and HP.

BlueCat, the Enterprise DNS company, today announced the launch of BlueCat DNS Edge. Managed in the cloud, BlueCat DNS Edge is a first-of-its-kind solution that uniquely leverages DNS data to identify and assess threats, and proactively works to block them before they can reach business-critical applications or data by driving policy down to DNS control points inside the network.

The migration to the cloud, the flexibility of network virtualization, and the promise of IoT involve IT transformations which place incredible strain on the security of the enterprise. This powerful solution leverages the ubiquity of DNS to gain enterprise-wide visibility into the actions of every device on a network, including non-traditional devices such as wireless security cameras, point of sale systems, ATMs and IoT devices. Deployed inside the network, DNS Edge control points identify suspicious internal behavior, patterns and threats, regardless of whether the device is communicating inside or outside the network.

“BlueCat DNS Edge is the first DNS security solution with the flexibility to deploy anywhere businesses need it – on premise, in the cloud, and as a core part of IoT architectures,” said Andrew Wertkin, Chief Product and Technology Officer for BlueCat. “Once deployed, DNS Edge can identify and remediate threats, provide forensics for the security operations center, and deliver device-specific telemetry without the need to deploy any agent or client on the devices.”

BlueCat DNS Edge’s simple, cloud-managed deployment model leverages existing DNS infrastructure. It allows organizations to deploy, at will, with no impact to existing infrastructure while driving resilience and reducing latency. Delivered as a service, DNS Edge dynamically scales to meet anticipated and unanticipated spikes in network activity, such as seasonal activity or a sudden attack against enterprise infrastructure.

“The vast majority of data breaches are caused by internal ‘bad actors’ – people and devices accessing protected data. Every company has access to core DNS data that can predict and prevent these security incidents,” said Michael Harris, Chairman and CEO of BlueCat. “BlueCat DNS Edge is a game-changer because it lets businesses harness their DNS data to assess threats and mitigate risk.”

DNS Edge complements BlueCat’s full Enterprise DNS solution portfolio, which includes BlueCat DNS Integrity™ and BlueCat Private Cloud™. Together, they provide the foundation for open, adaptive and secure networks.
